There are many closed solutions for home automation like Google Home, Apple Home, Alexa, Samsung SmartThings, etc. but they all want your data in their cloud and they decide what devices you’re allowed to use. If you want to be in control, then you want to use one of the biggest open source projects on GitHub: Home Assistant.

Jeena has been running three instances for the last ten years: in Poland at his parents’ summer house, in Germany at his parents’ house, and here in Korea in his own house. He also worked Home Assistant into his professional life by consulting for Electrolux around it.

He will talk about how easy it is to set up, how difficult it is to keep everything running, then about the community around it with podcasts, YouTubers, forums, an add-on store built by volunteers, etc.

He will also talk about the interoperability, which is more difficult than it would seem, because it goes against what especially the big companies are after, so they sometimes make it very difficult for you to integrate their things.

If you have thought about automating your home, this might be the talk to finally convince you.
